PCIe 5.0 specification completed: bandwidth doubled, X16 interface up to 64GB/s

Since last year, the PCI-SIG organization has announced the accelerated development of PCIe 5.0. Now that the standard is officially finalized, PCIe 5.0 will have four times the bandwidth of existing PCIe 3.0 and will be backward compatible with PCIe 4.0, 3.x, 2. x and 1.x.

After the release of PCI Express 3.0 in 2010, the PCI-SIG developed a plan to accelerate the development and release of the PCIe standard. According to this plan, the organization released PCIe 4.0 at the end of 2017, which doubled the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0. With less than two years of PCIe 4.0 release, the group has again introduced the PCIe 5.0 specification, which again doubles the available bandwidth for PCI Express.

The PCIe 5.0 standard builds on the PCIe 4.0 standard and is a relatively simple extension of 4.0. The latest standard doubles the transfer rate and now reaches 32 GigaTransfers /sec. In fact, for x1 slots, you can now reach 4GB / s, for x16 slots, up to 64GB / s, bidirectional operation up to 128GB / s.

The following table shows the evolution of PCIE bandwidth organized by media AnandTech:
