Inspired by the 1981 BBC Micro, Raspberry Pi is a small (about the size of a credit card) and very affordable (Raspberry Pi 3 is available for just a bit over $30) mini computer that was originally created for educational purposes.
Yep, at the very beginning, Raspberry Pi was used primarily to help students at a pre-university level to improve their programming skills. However, the idea was quickly adopted by makers, engineers, inventors, etc., who started to use the Raspberry Pi in their projects in the form of a more powerful microcontroller (compared to, say, Arduino devices).
True, the Raspberry Pi is not quite as fast and efficient as modern day laptops — but it is a full functioning Linux computer and comes with loads of capabilities for you to explore.

There are a number of bestselling products in the Raspberry Pi family like the Raspberry Pi 3 (launched in February in 2016) or the upgraded version (released the following year). Now, the makers world is waiting for the arrival of the Raspberry Pi 4 and speculating about the microcomputer's possible upgrades as they do so.
The thing is, there is no concrete information about what features the newest version of the computer will have. But, by taking a look at the previous record of upgrades and improvements, it seems that making predictions is quite justified.
Each and every edition of Raspberry computers so far has received an upgrade on the hardware side like processor, memory and connectivity. Can we expect the same on the Raspberry Pi 4? Seems like a lot of us do.
A number of reviewers believe that the new computer will definitely be getting a memory upgrade. The Pi 3 comes with 1GB of RAM, so it would be reasonable to assume the Pi 4 could contain anything between 2GB to 4GB of RAM.
A speedier processor is also a strong probability — the Pi 3 features the 4× ARM Cortex-A53 CPU clocked at 1.2GHz.
Another "rumour" going around is that the Pi4 will come fitted with USB Type C ports. This would be a step forward in connectivity, as well as a great way to do more with less and improve transfer speeds.
Last but by far not least, after Google have announced a partnership with Raspberry Pi, there's been a lot of speculation regarding the new computer's AI capabilities.
It is anticipated that the Raspberry Pi4 will be fitted with artificial intelligence features like language processing and facial recognition.
With that said, Google does remain quite vague on the issue: "We at Google are interested in creating smart tools for makers, and want to hear from you about what would be most helpful. As a thank you, we will share our findings with the community so that you can learn more about makers around the world."
So, we may just have to wait and see.
So, how long will we be waiting for?
Just as with the upgrades on the Raspberry Pi 4, the new computer's release date is shrouded in mystery.
As we've mentioned earlier in this article, the Raspberry Pi 3 was released in February in 2016. This was followed by the launch of a slightly improved version (with better Wi-Fi connectivity and more processing power) in March in 2018.
The general expectation is that the shiny new Raspberry Pi 4 will be ready for release in February of 2019 — but, once again, we can not know that for sure.
Pricing is another point of interest with the Raspberry Pi 4. Known as one of the smallest, most flexible and affordable PCs out there, the Raspberry Pi 4 is expected to keep to this budget-friendly policy.
You can get the Raspberry Pi 3 for around $35 — and that sort of sets the limit for the price of the new model. We definitely do not expect the Raspberry Pi 4 to break the bank.
