Red Magic 3: Gaming smartphone with fan, 90 Hz display & dock

The Nubia subsidiary Red Magic has introduced the Red Magic 3, the first smartphone with a built-in fan. Yes, that's right, the Megall case of the new high-end device for game fans also contains a real, real, active fan that is of course adapted to the size for the first time. But the Red Magic 3 also has a lot to offer in other respects.

When the first talk was heard at the Mobile World Congress 2019 that Nubia was planning a gaming phone with a built-in fan, it was hard to believe. A little later, patents appeared describing an active cooling system with a fan and several heatpipes for use in smartphones - by Nubia employees. Now the speculations are confirmed: the Red Magic 3 has a fan.

Directly below the camera on the back there are appropriate ventilation slots, whereby the fan itself is accommodated at the right housing edge above the volume rocker. From there it should dissipate the waste heat generated by the GPU and CPU by sucking air through the slots under the camera and passing it through the heatpipes and cooling fins running to the fan - and finally being conveyed out of the case by the fan.

All in all, the concept known as "ICE 2.0" and "multidimensional cooling system" with cooling surfaces of around 32 square centimeters and a heat transfer coefficient increased by 500 percent is intended to ensure a core CPU temperature reduced by 16 degrees Celsius. Ultimately, no throttling should occur even during long gaming sessions and the high clock rates of the optional gaming mode can allegedly be maintained without any problems, promises the manufacturer.

Nix Notch - but two large front loudspeakers

Apart from the curious cooling system, the Nubia Red Magic 3 also has a lot to offer. The manufacturer uses a 6.65 inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340x1080 pixels and a 19.5:9 format. The panel should cover the complete DCI-P3 color space and comes without a cutout or a hole. It's also interesting that the screen supports a maximum refresh rate of 90 Hertz, which is supposed to provide an even smoother display in games.

As expected, the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Octacore-SoC is the latest top hardware in the form of the hood, which achieves clock rates of up to 2.8 gigahertz with its eight cores. It is combined with six, eight or even twelve gigabytes of RAM and internal flash memory with 64, 128 or 256 GB, which can be expanded via a MicroSD card slot.

Camera no focus - but still a 48 megapixel sensor

The manufacturer doesn't focus on the cameras, because only a single Sony IMX586 sensor is installed on the back, which nevertheless offers 48 megapixel base resolution. A 16-megapixel camera sits in front. The gaming focus is also evident in the battery, as the Red Magic 3 has a battery with 5000mAh that is very generously dimensioned and can be charged with up to 27 watts per Quick Charge.

In contrast to many other manufacturers, Nubia uses two user-oriented loudspeakers here and is also sticking to the idea of attaching two capacitive touch buttons to one half of the case. In addition, there is also the well-known hardware switch for the gaming mode. New, however, are the seven pogopins on the left side with which the device can be inserted into an "e-sports dock". The dock then provides an Ethernet port, a headphone port (as on the device itself) and a USB Type C port for charging.

The Red Magic3 is again in a completely made of metal housing, which is quite martial designed and also has a LED light strip on the back. Android 9.0 "Pie" runs here as the operating system, of course, whereby Nubia also delivers its game mode again. All in all, the device is supposed to offer a largely stick-like user experience, but also wants to score with all kinds of game adaptations in terms of software.

According to Nubia, the Red Magic 3 will soon be available in China. From May, the device will also be available in Europe. So far, the company has not provided price information for our region. In China, the Red Magic 3 will be sold at prices starting at just under 390 euros, with the top model costing the equivalent of a good 570 euros.
