When it comes to looks, the main difference between the Mi AirDots and the Redmi AirDots is the color. While the Mi AirDots are made in the company's signature pure white color, the Redmi AirDots are pitch black. This could be a move on Xiaomi’s side to differentiate between Xiaomi and Redmi as two separate brands, and the Mi AirDots and the Redmi AirDots as two separate products — as other than the color, the two earbuds look pretty much the same.
The Redmi AirDots measure about 1.04 x 0.64 x 0.85 inches each and each earbud weighs 4.1 grams.
Just like the Mi AirDots, the Redmi AirDots come with a curved silicone tip and a small control panel: the Mi AirDots use touch controls while the Redmi AirDots have a small physical button on one of the earbuds highlighted by a glossy rim.
The earbuds sit quite nicely in the ear and, unlike Apple AirPods and earbuds with similar design, they seen much more compact and more suitable as sports earbuds, as there are no protruding elements like the earbud stem.
The fact that the Redmi AirDots are wire-free also makes them a great option for workouts as nothing will be getting in the way.
Most true wireless earbuds we've had the pleasure of reviewing come with touch controls — an option first introduced by the Apple AirPods. The Redmi AirDots, on the other hand, are controlled with a single button on one of the earbuds. The button has quite a bit of functionality: you will be able to turn the earbuds on and off, pause playback (one click), bring up Xiaomi’s voice assistant Xiao Ai or Apple’s Siri (double click), activate the camera trigger on the connected smartphone, etc.
The earbuds run on Bluetooth 5.0 and the communication between the two ear pieces as well as between the phone is quite quick.
Battery life is one of the most important characteristics of wireless earbuds as it will determine how long you will be able to use the earphones for.
Each Redmi AirDot is equipped with a 40mAh battery and, according to the company, the earbuds can last for up to four hours in between recharges in stereo mode and up to five hours in mono mode (when using just one earbud).
Charging the earbuds from 0% to a full charge takes about 90 minutes. The earbuds come with a 300mAh charging case and you will need to do to charge the earbuds is place them inside the charging case. With the charging dock, the earbuds can offer up to 12 hours of battery life.
Xiaomi have equipped the Redmi AirDots with 7.2 mm drivers and a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that offers noise cancelation — but it's not clear yet whether it will be actual noise cancelation as we have seen on the Bose QC35 II.
As we've mentioned above, the earbuds run on Bluetooth 5.0 and support HFP, A2DP, HSP and AVRCP Bluetooth protocols. The earbuds run on the built-in Realtek 8763 chip.
Let's sum things up. The Redmi AirDots have quite a few things going for them.
The earbuds’ most obvious advantage is definitely the price. A $15 price tag is a very good deal even for a pair of basic Bluetooth earphones. The Redmi AirDots throw in the true wireless experience practically for free.
With that, you also get:
● Quick and efficient Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity
● A 7.2mm dynamic driver unit
● Comfortable-to-wear lightweight silicone earbuds
● A 300mAh charging dock with 12 hours of extra power battery life
● Easy one-button control with Xiao AI, Google Assistant and Siri support.
So far, Xiaomi have reported over 140,000 pre-orders for the Redmi AirDots, which should go on sale starting from April 9th.
Should you be lining up to get the new Redmi AirDots? We would say yes. Somehow, being much cheaper than all the true wireless earbuds we've seen on the market, the earbuds seem to offer much of the same functionality and don't fall behind when it comes to design and controls either.
