Redmi AirDots vs. Xiaomi Mi AirDots: design

Both the Redmi AirDots and the Xiaomi Mi AirDots are true wireless earphones: this means that you will not see or beer any wires when using them. All the communication between the earbuds and your phone is handled by Bluetooth 5.0.

Redmi AirDots vs. Xiaomi Mi AirDots design

The first visible design difference between the two earbud sets is that the Redmi AirDots have moved far away from Xiaomi’s signature white color — they are only available in matte black, which is a nice option to have in the bleached sea of Apple AirPods look-alikes.

Size-wise, the earbuds are almost identical and they both come in a charging case. As you may have guessed, the case for the new earbuds is also made in matte black.

Another difference is in the controls. Unlike Xiaomi Mi AirDots, the Redmi AirDots feature a small physical button highlighted by a glossy black rim.

You can charge the Redmi earbuds the same way you would the Mi AirDots: simply put them back into the charging case.

Redmi AirDots vs. Xiaomi Mi AirDots: press or tap control

Each of Redmi’s earbuds comes with a 7.2mm driver, which ensures a very decent quality of sound when listening to music and clear sound reproduction during calls. Redmi highlight that the earbuds are equipped with DSP “environment noise reduction”.

The new earbuds come with a 300mAh charging case and can last up to 4 hours on a single charge. Naturally, if you count in the charging case, you can get up to 12 hours of use on the go — just like with the Mi AirDots. Both earbuds also come with the feature known as “smart energy”. This means that the earbuds will turn off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity. To turn the earphones off manually, you will simply need to place them in the charging case.

Using the earbuds is easy. Once you take them out of the charging case, they will immediately link to the nearest Bluetooth device they have last been set up to connect to.

The only aspect where the Redmi AirDots differ from the Mi AirDots in usage are the controls. As we've mentioned above, the Mi AirDots go “the Apple way” and feature touch controls on each earbud. The Redmi AirDots, on the other hand, come with one physical button on each earphone. This does not, though, make much of a difference when it comes to operation. To switch tracks, you will need to press the button once. Press it twice, and you get to the voice assistant. You can even have the button on your earbuds trigger the camera on your phone. You have all of the same functionality on the Mi AirDots, but you will need to slightly tap the touch controls instead of pressing a physical button.

Redmi AirDots vs. Xiaomi Mi AirDots: the verdict

We are entering an interesting time: it seems that in absence of worthy competition, Xiaomi have decided to compete with themselves. Surprisingly enough, they are doing a very good job of it, as the Redmi AirDots were announced at half the price of the Mi AirDots. How is this possible? We are not quite sure. The Redmi earbuds seem to come with basically the same set of features as their pricier counterparts (minus the color and touch controls) — and yet, one can get them for much cheaper.

The announced price of the Redmi AirDots was set at only $15, which is really inexpensive even for your standard Bluetooth headphone. And we are talking true wireless here. Naturally, the earbuds will probably be more expensive during the first stages of their market release — but, no matter how we look at it, the Redmi AirDots seem to be a better deal than the original Mi AirDots.

Then again, if you are looking to get as close as you possibly can to the Apple AirPods experience, the touch controls and the pristine white of the AirDots may be enough to make the difference.
