One of Xiaomi’s recent flagships, the Redmi Note 7 Pro, seems to have more and more competition to fend off — ironically enough, its main competitors are not coming from industry leaders like Samsung or Google but from the relatively new mobile market player — Realme. In this post, we put the Redmi Note 7 Pro against its newest opponent — the Realme 3 Pro sporting an impressive 6GB of RAM and a 25MP selfie cam. Will the Redmi Note 7 Pro be able to stay undefeated? Redmi Note 7 Pro vs. Realme 3 Pro: design

The Redmi Note 7 Pro is often praised for offering a prime look in a very affordable price range. The phone is practically all glass with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top for protection — and this is a rare offer in the budget smartphone category. The phone measures 6.27 x 2.96 x 0.32 inches and is available in Neptune Blue, Nebula Red and Classic Space Black.

The Realme 3 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a glossy plastic back, which looks good but lacks the "premium" feel of the Redmi Note 7 Pro. As for the color options, you will be able to choose between grey, blue and purple hues.

Both phones come with 6.3 inch displays and aim to offer a full screen experience via small water drop notches. With the Note 7 Pro, you get close to the 81.4% screen-to-body ratio while the Realme 3 Pro takes it a bit further with the 83.7% screen-to-body ratio.

Redmi Note 7 Pro vs. Realme 3 Pro: CPU and memory

The first thing to look at are the processors. The Redmi Note 7 Pro comes with the Snapdragon 675 while the Realme 3 Pro runs on the Snapdragon 710.  The Snapdragon 675 uses six Kryo 460 Silver high-efficiency cores clocked at 1.8 GHz and two high-performance Kryo 460 Gold cores operating at 2 GHz. The Snapdragon 710 features eight Kryo 360 cores.

The two processors offer similar processing speeds and, according to Geekbench, rank at the same level in performance. According to Antutu, on the other hand, the Snapdragon 675 outscores the Snapdragon 710.

You get the same options when it comes to RAM and internal storage: you can choose between 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal memory. Both phones support additional memory (up to 256 GB) on the dedicated microSD slot.

As for the operating system, you get the base of Android 9.0 (Pie) with ColorOS 6 on top for the Realme 3 and MIUI 10 for the Redmi Note 7 Pro. Both UIs are significantly customized and you won’t find much of the original Android ecosystem onboard.

Both phone UIs are highly customised and don't look or feel very much like stock Android, which can be a major disadvantage for some users. You will find quite a bit of pre-installed bloatware  on both devices and there are occasional apps even in stock apps. The good news is that you can swap traditional UI navigation for gestures on both phones. Plus, the Realme 3 Pro comes with a nice feature called Realme Share (think Apple's Airdrop) that lets you quickly transfer files between compatible Realme devices.

Redmi Note 7 Pro vs. Realme 3 Pro: cameras

Even a quick look at the specs will tell you that the Redmi Note 7 Pro does a bit more when it comes to rear cameras: you get the combo of the 48MP primary lens that uses the Sony IMX586 sensor with f/1.79 aperture. The cam is capable of 4K video at 30fps and features electronic image stabilization. On the front, there is a much less impressive 13MP selfie shooter, which is complemented by a whole set of beautifying and selfie effects.

The Realme 3 Pro is quite a different story. On the back, there is a 16MP Sony IMX519 camera with an f/1.7 aperture (the same sensor that you will find on the OnePlus 6T). The phone also has a secondary 5MP sensor for depth, which is used primarily for portrait shots. On the front, though, you get a 25MP selfie cam. Both smartphones have their cameras’ performance enhanced by AI features, which select optimal settings before taking the shot. According to user reviews, both phones are capable of decent detail but the Realme 3 Pro does generally better when it comes to color rendering. The phone has also been praised for its clearer low-light performance, while the photos taken on the Redmi Note 7 Pro seem to appear a bit grainy. When it comes to portraits, both phones have been noted for good edge detection.

Redmi Note 7 Pro vs. Realme 3 Pro: the verdict

So, what do we have in the end? We have two new budget smartphones priced at just a bit over $200 that come with a lot to offer. Both phones are powerful, have good cameras, feature decent battery life and are based on Android 9 Pie.

The Redmi Note 7 Pro seems to come out a winner in benchmarks — but the Realme 3 Pro has been praised as a strong gaming phone letting you play a variety of mobile games at higher settings. With that, if you are looking for a phone on a budget but want that premium look and feel, the Redmi Note 7 Pro would come closest to your needs. Both devices come with good cameras for the price and offer good detail for landscape shots, portraits and selfies.
