Roomba S9: iRobot's most powerful and advanced robot vacuum cleaner

The Roomba S9 has an optimized design to clean corners better and all kinds of surfaces deeper, while maintaining a lower profile and more intelligence.

The Roomba S9 vacuum (or Roomba S9+ when it includes its base) debuts a design that marks a new beginning for the company because it is expected to be implemented in other company robot vacuum cleaners as well.

In addition to the new look, the Roomba S9 also promises to have the company's most advanced algorithms and intelligence, as well as the most powerful cleaning system iRobot has ever developed.

Design: Deeper and better cleaning of corners

The iRobot Roomba S9 now does not have the traditional circular design of these vacuum cleaners (as we saw up on the Roomba i7), nor does its trash can be removed from the bottom or front.

This way, the front of the roomba has straight corners as we have seen in robot vacuum cleaners from Samsung and other companies.

This new design allows the Roomba S9 to be more precise than the Roomba i7 in the corners by better covering right angles.

This design also allowed the company to place larger rolls or brushes on its bottom to vacuum more space at a time. The company says these rolls are up to 30 percent longer than before.

In addition, the brush propeller is positioned closer to the edge of the vacuum cleaner and has five 30mm arms, which also promises to help improve performance.

As for the compartment where you store what you vacuum, the Roomba S9 learned from the Roborock S6 and S5 by integrating it into the top, just by opening its lid you have access - something easier to use.

It even has a quiet mode and a cleaning system similar to what we found on the Roborock S6, which is good.

Around that compartment, or circular top is where the lights that indicate the status of the vacuum are now located, whether it needs to be loaded, locked, started cleaning or has already finished. This is certainly more attractive and easy to see because it is so much bigger, only during the time you can try it it seemed to me that the color shades are not as strong as I would like, so sometimes one could get a little confused.

Still, the vacuum has its base or dock that extracts or vacuums the Roomba itself so you don't have to manually clean it as often as the company introduced with the Roomba i7.

However, that base requires some special company bags and that station is different from the one we found on the Roomba i7, so that previous generation can't be used.

Still, that iRobot says that base can store up to 30 cleaning loads, which allows you to clean the product less frequently than before.

Other features and technology

The Roomba S9 uses an advanced 3D sensor to scan just what's in front of it at a rate of 25 times per second and uses the same Imprint Smart Mapping technology that allows it to learn your house plan to determine the best way to vacuum, as well as to allow you to request that it clean only a specific room.

This vacuum also has the company's iAdapt 3.0 navigation system with vSlam technology that helps you efficiently navigate your home and track what and where you've cleaned.

With this, in the event that the battery is depleted, the vacuum cleaner can return to its base to charge and then return just where it was before.

The Roomba S9 also has the ability to detect when it is necessary to increase suction power for best results, especially when cleaning carpets.

The Roomba S9 also brings all the benefits of learning more than one map, can be controlled remotely (connects to Wi-Fi) through the iRobot Home app and you can even ask it to clean a specific room through voice commands, thanks to its integration with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

Team up with Braava Jet M6

The Roomba S9 also has the ability to work as a team with the new Braava Jet Mower M6 so that the S9 vacuums first so that once the M6 finishes it can start cleaning automatically.

All this can be controlled from the app and can also be done per room.

Price and availability

The Roomba S9 is priced at US$999, while the Roomba S9+ (Roomba S9 Plus) is priced at US$1,299 and includes the base that extracts what Roomba has vacuumed. That base will also be sold separately for $349 in case you want to buy it in the future.

The Roomba S9 is now available in the U.S. and Canada and will hit stores on June 9.

In Europe, the Roomba S9 Plus is priced at 1,499 euros and will be available on July 12.

First impressions

There is no doubt that the Roomba S9 is postulated as a great robot vacuum cleaner that allows it to compete better with the Roborock S6 that has surprised not only for its versatility, but also for its efficiency and price.

The Roomba S9 is more powerful, quieter and its new design helps to make cleaning more effective than what the Roomba i7 offered and surely surpasses also what the Roborock S6 offers.

Even so, the Roomba S9 has much of the technology of the i7 and is postulated as an important refinement.

However, where the Roomba S9 is still lagging behind the Roborock S6 is that it does not allow you to tell the vacuum cleaner an exact cleaning point in a room, but it would be necessary to create another room. In addition, it still doesn't seem to have as many customization options as the other Chinese vacuum cleaner.

Its price is certainly high and it's one of the most expensive vacuum cleaners you can buy, but if the performance differs a lot compared to the i7 and others on the market, it might be worth it for many -- just don't expect it to go up and down stairs because it doesn't yet.
