The 48-megapixel cell phones proliferated this year, coming from brands such as Xiaomi, Motorola and Asus. Samsung went further and announced a 64 megapixel sensor for smartphones, called Isocell Bright GW1; it should be used in a new device called Galaxy A70S.
Samsung plans to launch the world's first 64-megapixel camera phone in the second half of 2019, according to the Korean ETNews technology portal. It should be called Galaxy A70S and use the company's Isocell sensor.
As we explain around here, the Isocell Bright GW1 uses a technology to combine four pixels into one: thanks to Tetracell, it is possible to capture crisp 16 megapixel photos in low light. In bright environments, you can use all 64 megapixels of the sensor.
In addition, the GW1 promises increased HDR performance: it reaches up to 100 dB in real time, more than the 60 dB of other sensors. This means a longer dynamic range for photos that don't get blown up in too much light or dark in too little light.
Samsung wants to overtake Sony in mobile cameras
The GW1 is expected to go into mass production in the second half, in time for the Galaxy A70S. According to ETNews, Samsung is in second place in the market for mobile sensors and wants to overtake the leader Sony - hence the interest in going ahead with an option of 64 MP.
More megapixels are no guarantee of quality for the camera, but can help: in the ranking of DxOMark, three phones in the top 10 have Sony IMX586 sensor of 48 megapixels (Honor 20 Pro, OnePlus 7 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 9).
It is worth remembering that Samsung sells the Galaxy A70 with triple rear camera and 32 megapixel main sensor. It has a 6.7-inch screen, 4,500 mAh battery and suggested price of R$ 2,499 in Brazil.
