Snapdragon 675 review: a mid-range chip with excellent gaming performance and triple cameras

Qualcomm has for some time now been reinforcing its 600 line, which houses powers as distant as the Snapdragon 626 and the Snapdragon 670. A category for two steps below the leaders in its catalogue, and just one step away from the recent Snapdragon 700, with the Snapdragon 710 per flag. Now, the Snapdragon 675 makes its appearance, to add a little more excitement to the recent niche of 'gaming' phones.

Snapdragon 675

The premise of this new Snapdragon 675 is none other than to bring features of the Snapdragon 845 to lower categories, so that phones intended to squeeze games can also see their price reduced. Logically, so is their power, but a way that does not resent sensibly with respect to their older siblings. This is the new Snapdragon 675 that debuts today.

Focused on gaming

Gaming adds to two of the pillars on which Qualcomm has already built its latest processors for mobile phones. Features designed to express the experience of games and that now accompany the improvements dedicated to cameras, and the artificial intelligence that for several models supports each operation performed inside the CPU, even with a separate module to be able to dedicate it exclusively to such processes.

Focused on gaming

The new Snapdragon 675 arrives to raise the number of frames per second, and even to stabilize them while unloading the main processor from other tasks. Qualcomm says that titles like PUBG, Honor of Kings or Cross Fire Mobile will get optimized performance, improve sound quality and prioritize the response of the active connection, whether WiFi or data, to be able to keep games online more smoothly.

The new Snapdragon 675 is compatible with Vulkan and also with OpenGL 3.2, and is specially optimized for different graphics engines among which are the most widespread of the moment. Unreal Engine 4, Unity, Messiah or NeoX, among others, already run more smoothly in the new Snapdragon 675, which has not few internal optimization tools for running games.

Qualcomm also gives some relative figures on the performance improvement of this new Snapdragon 675 versus the current Snapdragon 670. For example, games are released 30% faster, music is released 20% faster and social networks 15% faster. Web browsing improves by 35%. Remember, about the Snapdragon 670.

Improvements for camera: bokeh and triple cameras

The world of mobile cameras has long been absorbing different revolutions at high speed, and the Snapdragon 675 takes care of almost all of them, thus offering the possibility to incorporate them into super-medium line phones. Qualcomm's new chip is compatible, for example, with triple camera systems such as those already offered by Huawei, Samsung and some other manufacturer. It also natively supports dual or triple camera systems with optical zoom.

Improvements for camera:

This optical zoom, in fact, can have up to five magnifications. Let's remember that we currently have two magnifications on most phones with optical zoom, and three magnifications on Huawei phones with their own processor. In addition, the new chip will be able to handle sensors with wide angle and openings greater than 2.5 times the normal angular. Of course, also with super wide angles, a trend that is beginning to impose itself silently.

Of course, as in previous models, the Snapdragon 675 is capable of offering selective blur, or bokeh, natively. What some manufacturers call Portrait mode, or Aperture mode, or Stereo mode. In short, a blurred background with a sharp foreground. A blur that also has separation of shots during capture, including one for noise reduction.

Although we will discuss it later, the Snapdragon 675 is capable of handling sensors up to 25 megapixels with native HDR. The Snapdragon 675 is compatible with three-dimensional face unlocking systems and supports laser focusing systems. As for video, it will be able to capture HD video at 480 frames per second.

Integrated artificial intelligence

As mentioned earlier, the new Snapdragon 675 also comes equipped with everything you need to enhance the execution of artificial intelligence code. Specifically, machine learning and deep learning code, necessary for many applications and layers at this time, and will continue to develop over time.

To execute this code, the Snapdragon 675 is able to work together and coordinated different sub-units of the chip itself as the GPU, CPU and DSP. This artificial intelligence not only lends a hand with the phone's camera, but also in facial recognition in three dimensions, and offering different speed improvements over the Snapdragon 670.

Other enhanced features

Other enhancements are added to this processor, such as biometric authentication for payments through the camera, or the enhanced security provided by the DSP that boosts unlocking speed by 300%. When it comes to sound, we also have Aqstic Voice UI, to communicate effectively with voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant.

But let's not leave the improvements in autonomy. The figures offered by Qualcomm, always approximate, tell us of more than 11 hours of video playback, more than three hours of recording, more than 7 hours of games, up to 24 hours of phone calls and the ability to play music for 5 days. As usual, you'll need to test it when you get on board the first terminal.

Snapdragon 675: technical specs and features

In the new processor we find a Kryo eight-core custom GPU, being these fourth generation. So, we have two 2GHz cores for maximum performance and another six 1.7GHz cores for less demanding situations, and to save energy. On the GPU, a sixth generation Adreno 615.

In the DSP we find the Hexagon 685, also of sixth generation, and we have a Snapdragon X12 modem that allows 4G downloads of category 12, with up to 600 Mbps. We also have Aqstic and aptX audio. For the artificial intelligence engine, third generation Qualcomm AI Engine.

In terms of photography, the Snapdragon 675 supports sensors up to 25 megapixels, and is capable of super slow motion video recording up to 480 frames per second in HD. It supports screens up to FullHD+ and allows fast loading thanks to the Quick Charge 4+ system.

The Snapdragon 675 has been used on many mid-range smartphones, such as Redmi Note 7 Pro, Vivo V15 Pro, and Vivo U20. And it has been well-received among global users.
