At the beginning of the year, the market for active noise reduction headphones was divided into two parts: on the one hand the Sony WH-1000xM3, and on the other the Bose QC35ii. The first one with the advantage of youth could claim the title of best audio headset, but the American audio specialist responded this summer with the Bose Headphones 700.
So, which one to choose between the Sony WH-1000xM3 and the Bose Headphones 700 ? Let's take a look at the situation by detailing each aspect of these two helmets.
As much as the QC35ii seems to have come from another time, the Headphones 700 is particularly modern in its minimalist design and its earpieces that can be adjusted by sliding along a tubular rod. It is clean, practical and solid in design. In addition, the silicone coating promises to be much stronger in the long term than the plastic of the old model. The only downside is that it does not fold back.
It is also light and comfortable and its touch interface on the front of the earpieces is designed to avoid false contact. There are still a few buttons at the back to turn on/off, to manage ambient noise or for the assistant: the classics.
The WH-1000xM3 no longer has to prove anything at this level. He has only repeated almost identically an already winning formula by correcting the few shortcomings of his predecessors. It is comfortable, foldable, its pads age well, as well as its plastic coating.
Its interface, on the other hand, is a little more frustrating since its touch zones tend to activate at the slightest touch (be careful when you scratch your head), and it is necessary to choose for one of the buttons whether it manages noise reduction or the assistant. Those who use both will suffer.
Finally, even if it is not really a design element, the Headphones 700 offers multipoint connectivity that the WH-1000xM3 does not have. Real comfort in use, this allows you to connect several devices simultaneously to your headset and make your daily life easier.
In other words, if bending your headset is an essential element, the Sony WH-1000xM3 will be the most appropriate, but in all other cases, it is the Bose Headphones 700 that wins, with a good head start.
On noise reduction, Bose has clearly made huge progress since the QC35ii and the Headphones 700 is clearly much better on this point. It can even match the efficiency of the Sony WH-1000xM3. If your goal is to reduce disturbing noise around you, then Sony and Bose are neck and neck and it's difficult to separate them.
Putting your hand on the WH-1000xM3 earphone will cut off the active noise reduction.
On the other hand, the noise reduction of the WH-1000xM3 is more natural. The isolation effect of the Headphones 700 is very strong and suffers from a slight wind that may disturb some people. Because of this, it may be necessary to reduce the insulation power of the Headphones 700, which makes it less efficient than the Japanese model.
Each in its own style, the two headphones offer excellent sound quality: warm and "bass" for the Bose, a little more neutral and faithful for the Sony. These are two schools that depend only on the user's taste.
On the other hand, the WH-1000xM3 takes the lead over its opponent on the compatibility of the codecs used. Indeed, the Headphones 700 is not compatible with aptX, aptX HD or LDAC, but only with AAC and SBC codecs.
Note that the Bose application also does not include an equalizer, while the Sony application allows you to fine-tune the sound quality of your headphones and adjust several predefined profiles.
Once again, the point goes to Sony WH-1000xM3.
On battery life, the Bose Headphones 700 holds around 20 hours, while the Sony WH-1000xM3 easily exceeds 25 hours and can even easily mount up to 35 hours by occasionally turning off active noise reduction.
Both headsets charge in USB-C and can recover 5 to 10 hours of battery life in just a few minutes of charging.
The Bose Headphones 700 is clearly a very good headset and above all a huge improvement over the aging QC35ii. However, the Sony WH-1000xM3 has nothing to be ashamed of, far from it, because if it still lacks multipoint, it remains better than its opponent of the day on many points.
In addition, Sony headphones have the luxury of being cheaper than Bose headphones. It is difficult in these conditions to make a different choice.
