what to buy instead of the new iPod Touch

Originally, we expected Apple to launch the new iPod touch along with iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5, iMacs and the second AirPods in March. After this didn't happen, the expectations for a new iPod were almost zero. However, Apple surprised us once again yesterday and is particularly astonishing with the installed hardware. We asked ourselves directly: "What was Apple thinking about?

New iPod touch: Only old hardware

The question can be answered with an unequivocal "Yes". For the seventh generation of iPod touch, Apple is relying for the third time on the familiar slim design with a 4-inch display. That wouldn't be so bad if something had happened elsewhere. Rather, Apple refrained from updating the cameras, although they advertised the device with group FaceTime, among other things. Actually, there should have been an upgrade from 1.2 megapixels to 7 megapixels at least for the FaceTime HD camera in order to meet the self-set standards. In addition, the lack of the touch ID sensor in the home button can be easily overcome.

But it's especially interesting that Apple uses the A10 Fusion instead of the A11 Bionic and thus shortens the possible service life from the beginning. In addition, the better chip could have probably also provided longer battery life. The same also applies to the Bluetooth connection. Here, too, Apple relies on the old-fashioned Bluetooth 4.1, while some devices or functions already require at least version 4.2 and the associated additional security as well as the low-energy mode. If, for example, you use newer Bluetooth headphones, both the transmission and the possible battery life can be negatively affected.

Apple's decisions behind the new iPod touch are difficult for outsiders to understand, as a lot could have been achieved with small changes. Apple is in its own way and the price of at least 229 Euros for the 32 GB model also seems to be too high for the old hardware. There are much better alternatives here.

Alternatives to iPod touch

If you're looking to stay in the Apple universe and get a solid music player for a small price, you might want to consider an older iPhone model rather than the iPod touch. For example, you can buy an iPhone 6s or better yet an iPhone SE at a low price on eBay Classifieds. If, on the other hand, you're looking for something new and willing to spend at least 350 euros, you shouldn't buy a 128GB iPod touch either, but instead get an iPhone 7. This is often available from various retailers. An iPhone 7 also has the advantage that it is dust- and splash-proof according to IP67, making it perfect as a sports companion.

Apart from Apple products, there are also numerous alternatives from other smartphone manufacturers. For example, Samsung offers several smartphones for less than 200 euros, which are perfectly suited as music players. But if you're looking for a mix of music player and camera, you should take a look at Google. With the new Google pixel 3a the enterprise offers the camera of the large model for the small price of approximately 399 euro. Often you can also find much better offers at various dealers, so that you often even pay less than 350 euros.
