For Mac users, USB4 brings more uniformity. In fact, the entire USB4 specification is based on Intel's Thunderbolt, which is currently used on MacBook Pro/Air and Mac desktops. Many Mac users have already experienced the benefits of USB4. The Thunder 3 you use is essentially the same as USB4.
Based on the exposure in March of this year, the USB4 can support external graphics cards like the Thunderbolt 3, as well as provide two 4K displays or a 5K display. The good news is that the Thunderbolt 3 data cable and accessories you have now are also USB 4 compliant and can run at 40 Gbps on USB 4.
Another benefit of USB4 is the improved compatibility between the accessories and the ability to provide powerful performance accessories at different prices. Many of the accessories currently use the USB-C interface, but they do not support Thunderbolt 3 technology, and the biggest credit of USB4 is to use the Thunderbolt 3 standard for its own use.
However, it's important to note that although USB4 benefits from Thunderbolt's technology, Thunderbolt 3 is still an "optional feature" for USB4, which means device manufacturers can eliminate the need for Thunderbolt testing and certification requirements and claim to support USB4.
In addition, Intel and USB-IF also indicated that USB4 will allow multiple USB4 port dongles, and many USB-C dongles currently only support USB-A or HDMI. USB4 will also improve charging support, any device that provides USB4 needs to support USB Power Delivery technology, and USB 4 can still provide up to 100W of charging power.
Although the USB4 standard has been developed, USB-IF is not yet ready to announce the USB4 logo and brand cooperation. USB-IF means that consumer-oriented brand marketing has not yet been finalized, but the focus will be on its performance level.
So the last question is when the product with USB4 will be available. If the progress is smooth, we will see the USB4 standard in 2020.
