The Netflix stream jerks, the Wi-Fi no longer arrives in the attic: Too weak Wi-Fi also poses problems for many users in this country. The current generation of routers uses a variety of tricks to overcome such hurdles and increase the speed and reach of the wireless network in their own homes. The devices use intelligent techniques to eliminate Wi-Fi interference. COMPUTER BILD has tested the top routers in the lab and explained which new features matter.
Basically, you distinguish between routers with and without modem. The former makes sense, especially if there is no modem or you want everything in a box. In a DSL router, everything you need at home – DSL modem, phone system, network and Wi-Fi. It works on every DSL connection in Germany. The range and speed of functionality are considerable, but the devices are easy to use. And because all the features are in a box, you save yourself cable salad. At the top of COMPUTER BILD's best DSL routers is AVM's current top model, the FritzBox 7590 for 196 euros (as of all prices: June 5, 2019). The box offers many functions, fast Wi-Fi and is well prepared for the future. If you are looking for a cheap FritzBox, the FritzBox 7560 is well advised for 147 euros. Value for money fits and electricity consumption is low. Wi-Fi isn't quite as nimble as the more expensive FritzBox 7590. Not yet sent through the lab, but already convincing in the practice test: The FritzBox 7530 for 118 euros offers sufficient Wi-Fi power for small households and also dominates Supervectoring 35b for fast DSL. Otherwise, only the expensive top model 7590 can do this at AVM. All of these models have already received the update to the current version FritzOS 7.
If you don't need all the functions in a box and already have a cable modem or a provider-router (Vodafone Easybox, O2 Homebox), you should look at the super routers without modem. These devices offer a little more speed and can be easily connected to the provider box or cable modem. The catch: Your power consumption is immense and a telephone system is missing. The best router without modem and at the same time The Price Performance Winner is The Asus rt-ac88u for 229 euros. Asus markets the model as a "gaming router" and so it is also intended to eliminate ripbelts in some online games. But the router is not only interesting for players: It really sets pace and offers MIT eight lan-jacks neat ports. The power consumption is MIT almost 17 watts but quite high. Exciting: The successor rt-ax88u dominates the fresh standard wi-fi 6 (wlan-ax), through which tempo and range are supposed to increase.
There are some factors that affect the quality of the Wi-Fi signal. One of the most common problems is Wi-Fi interference. Especially in rental apartments or terraced houses, the Wi-Fi signals of neighboring routers are disturbed. The result: Disconnection disconnections, seemingly inexplicable stalling of the connection. Range problems are also far from a thing of the past. Current routers spark on the two frequency ranges 2.4 and 5 gigahertz (GHz). Wi-Fi in the 5 GHz range is very fast and less susceptible to problems with the Wi-Fi ac standard. However, the range is lower than the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and not every device can spark in the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
