Three power steps on the same ladder

Xiaomi Mi 9 Processor

With their similarities and their differences, the great separation between the three phones occurs in the section of your processor. Three quite defined powers with the Xiaomi Mi 9 crowning the trio, the Xiaomi Mi 9T in the middle zone and the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE closing the procession from the third place. And yet, with a common feature: enough power to play all kinds of games, even the most demanding and peculiar as Fortnite.

It's clear that the Xiaomi Mi 9 is the most powerful of the family with the Snapdragon 855 in charge of operations, although the Snapdragon 730 that moves the Xiaomi Mi 9T is also not far behind despite being a lower category. It is one of Qualcomm's latest chips and is suitable for gaming. That means we can put games on your embers and you can consume them all. And although the less powerful, the Snapdragon 712 of the Mi 9 SE also leaves the device in a good place but clearly located in the midrange, below its brothers of high and super midrange.

In terms of storage, we have a technical tie between the three models. All three come with 6GB of RAM and two memory options, a lower one with 64GB and a higher one with 128GB. And no, none of them allows to add a microSD card to expand the set, so we must be careful when choosing the model we are going to buy because there will be no possible future rectifications.

And since we are talking about power, we can close with the batteries. And again, steps with the Xiaomi Mi 9 at the top but not by capacity but by speed and options. Xiaomi's catalogue leader offers 3,300 mAh but with 27W fast charge and 20W wireless charge. None of his brothers have wireless charging and none of the other fast charges are as fast, as the 4,000 mAh of the Mi 9T and the 3,070 mAh of the Mi 9 SE charge only at 18W. That is fast charging, but not so much.

Some screens with cutout and others notch

Xiaomi Mi 9T pop-up camera and uncut screen

The Xiaomi Mi 9T with its pop-up camera and uncut screen. With this lamentable play on words we start the part dedicated to the screens. Here there is more or less a tie, at least in terms of resolutions as the diagonals vary and some details. At the top we have the 6.39 inches of the Mi 9, protected with Gorilla Glass 6 and with a cut in the upper central part for the camera. The same applies to the Mi 9 SE, which is also smaller with only 5.97 inches.

The last to arrive, the Xiaomi Mi 9T, has the pecularity that it hides the front camera in the body, so there's no 'notch' here and no clipping that's worth it. An all 6.39 inch screen phone that also repeats with a 19.5:9 ratio and FullHD+ resolution of 2.340 x 1.080 pixels. So the decision as to the screen should be, do we care more about the diagonal or that it has or no longer has clipping? Because the rest are very similar. Well, taking into account that Mi 9T and Mi 9 SE have Gorilla Glass 5 and not 6.

In addition, the three screens are compatible with HDR content but only the Mi 9 offers compatibility with HDR10, in addition to having DCI-P3 for color representation. By the way, the three phones hide the fingerprint reader under the screen and complement it with software facial unlocking. A detail to be taken into account even if it doesn't differentiate between them.

The game goes on between cameras

Mi 9 SE rear camera

And again, another big doubt because the three phones play in a very similar league here but with nuances. All three have three cameras in the back and a front, although the Xiaomi Mi 9T's camera is hidden inside the top frame, leaving the screen completely clear. But even in megapixels they tie, with 20 megapixels for selfies in each phone and the only lens differentiation, with two f/2.0 models and one with f/2.2, the last to arrive, the Mi 9T.

Looking at the Mi 9, we find a main sensor of 48 megapixels IMX586, a secondary one with super wide angle lens of 16 megapixels and a third sensor with optical zoop of two magnifications and lens f/2.2. The Mi 9 SE bet is very similar, although reducing the super wide angle to 13 megapixels and the phone to 8 megapixels. Sensors and lenses almost identical to those of the Xiaomi Mi 9T except that in this we have the IMX582 for the main camera, which does not allow us to record 4K at more than 30 frames per second.

Three rear cameras and a front camera, hidden or not, for all three models. With the Mi 9 at the front in terms of power.

In terms of focus, all three phones have a PDAF focus by phase detection, although only the Mi 9 also has laser focus, which makes it even faster. In the rest of the features, technical tie: HDR photographs, same photographic modes in the three Dual LED flashes.

But, please notice that we also have a tie in terms of connectivity. The three phones have two SIM trays, the two with Dual Standby to use both cards at the same time. Also WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS (Dual on the Mi 9) and NFC, plus infrared port on all but the Mi 9T. The big difference here is the headphone jack, absent in all but the new Mi 9T, which thanks to that wins the FM radio.

Difficult decision

Xiaomi Mi 9

As we can see, we are talking about phones located in different categories and, therefore, different powers and prices, although all moving at more than acceptable levels of performance for daily use. All three are capable of running apps and games of all kinds, with no clear differences except in very demanding games. In spite of everything, a high range, a super medium range and a medium range.

Here the key can be found in what we really need in a mobile phone and, above all, how much we are willing to spend on it. From 449 euros for the most basic Mi 9 to 329 euros for the most basic Mi 9T, although it would be logical for the Mi 9 SE to go down now that the new brother has arrived. But the decision is in your hands. Which one to buy? We have left you all the similarities and differences. It's your turn.
