Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7: what does the two budget smartphones offer and which one is the best choice?

ByGoraud Mazanec 2019-07-19 6030

Both Xiaomi Mi A3 and Redmi Note 7 are two budget Xiaomi Phones newly released this year. The Xiaomi Mi A3 offers a series of significant upgrades on the basis of Xiaomi Mi A2, but will it stand out compared to another Xiaomi’s mid-range phones killer - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7? Let’s find out.

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7

The arrival of the new Xiaomi Mi A3 has not pleased everyone, despite being the third generation of the world's best-selling Android One phone series. Blame it on Xiaomi's decision to resort to a screen of "low" resolution, and changes that do not represent a very obvious advance over the last edition, despite the fact that the price of the device has remained fixed at 249 euros that already cost the Xiaomi Mi A2, model with which we compared this new model.

All this causes that, very probably, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is not going to have it easy to get to stand out from the great competition in the mid-range segment, and is that even other models of Xiaomi could make it difficult to ascend to the success of the new model with Android One, by offering an equally complete and balanced package, but more, at a price similar or lower than the Mi A3.

This is the case of Redmi Note 7, one of the company's most popular models launched in the first half of 2019, whose value for money is still difficult to match even the rest of the brand's models. But how does it compare to the Xiaomi Mi A3?

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7: design and screen

The aesthetics of Xiaomi's last two mid-range models are practically identical. In both cases we find devices made of Gorilla Glass glass and aluminium, with similar sizes - somewhat larger Redmi Note 7 - and the same visual language. The back is led by the photographic system, more numerous in the case of the Mi A3, and in the case of the Redmi we find a capacitive fingerprint reader, while the Mi A3 integrates it into the screen.

Xiaomi Mi A3 design and screen

Speaking of the screen, it is necessary to point out that, while the Redmi Note 7 has a 6.3 inch diagonal IPS Full HD+ panel, the Mi A3 reduces both its size and resolution to 6.088 inches and an HD+ resolution. This, added to the fact that the panel makes use of OLED technology to include the integrated fingerprint reader, translates into less sharpness and clarity when displaying the screen elements, due to the pentile pixel matrix used by the panel.

Otherwise, neither model has IP certification for water and dust, nor wireless charging. The detail that is not missing in either model is the 3.5 mm headphone port, as well as the USB Type C.

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7: CPU, battery and OS

The differences between the two phones are also not very significant when it comes to the technical section. From Redmi's Snapdragon 660 we went to the Mi A3's 665, which should be a slight improvement in terms of energy consumption since the platform reduces its size to 11 nanometres. Beyond that, we have the possibility to choose identical memory configurations in both models, since the Redmi Note 7 offers 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 32, 64 or 128 GB of expandable internal memory, while the Mi A3 only offers 4 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of storage, also expandable.

Its batteries are also similar, with a difference of only 30 mAh in favor of the Mi A3 with respect to the 4,000 mAh of the Redmi. Therefore, I'm afraid that in neither case the autonomy will be a problem.

Xiaomi Mi A3 Battery capacity

The main change, and probably the aspect that will lead most people to choose one or the other is in the software. Of course, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is part of the Android One initiative, so its software barely adds to pure Android, and has system updates secured for a minimum of two years. Redmi Note 7, on the other hand, uses MIUI, Xiaomi's Android-based operating system that gives life to most of the mobile phones that make up Xiaomi's catalogue.

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7: cameras

Yes, the photographic systems of these two phones are more different. As much by number of cameras -3 vs 2-, as by the proposal that offers each one of them.

Xiaomi Mi A3 cameras

In both cases we find a 48 megapixel f/1.8 sensor leading the back of the phones. However, the Mi A3 is accompanied by an 8 megapixel secondary wide-angle sensor and a 2 megapixel sensor that captures depth information. On the other hand, Redmi Note 7 only has a secondary sensor of 5 megapixels, whose purpose is only to enable the background blur effect in portrait mode images.

The front sensor is also different, being the 32 megapixel Mi A3 and the 13 megapixel Redmi Note 7.

Xiaomi Mi A3 vs Redmi Note 7: which one should I buy?

In the absence of the Xiaomi Mi A3 passing through our test table, it seems that so far the Redmi Note 7 seems a smarter purchase than its relative with Android One.

The technical differences are not significant, nor are the improvements in terms of photography - after all, the main sensor is still the same - and we also found compromises with which we will have to learn to coexist as the lowest screen resolution.

And if all the above were not enough, today it is already possible to find the 4+64 GB configuration of Redmi Note 7 at a price almost 80 euros lower than that of the Mi A3. So unless you are not willing to buy a terminal with MIUI inside -if so, there are many other alternatives with Android One to the Mi A3, probably the Redmi model is a more recommendable option for most.
