Arrival Notice |
The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is Xiaomi's main flagship released earlier this year. The Mi Mix 3 is noted for its impressive 93.4% screen-to-body ratio and an innovative design allowing for it: the phone uses a sliding screen to house its cameras and free up more display real estate. The Mi Mix 3 comes with a 6.39-inch 2340x1080 AMOLED display enhanced with 600-nit brightness and 103.8-percent NTSC gamut.
On the inside, the phone continues to impress with its value for money offer: you get the speedy Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chipset and at least 6GB of RAM to pair it with. Plus, the Mi Mix 3 supports up to 256GB of storage.
There is a 3,200 mAh battery onboard paired with Quick Charge 4.0+ and the support of 10W wireless charging. You can also charge the phone via its USB Type-C port — which you will also need for wired audio equipments as there is no headphone jack.
The camera game is not bad either. The Mi Mix 3 sports two dual cameras: the back cam uses a 12MP Sony IMX363 image sensor with large 1.4µm pixels and dual pixel autofocus. The rear other cam sports a 2x telephoto lens and uses a 12MP sensor with 1.0µm pixels. On the front, there is another dual cam with a 24MP main module and a 2MP depth sensor for beautiful bokehs.
Around the same time as the Mi Mix 3 was released, the company announced that an upgraded version of the phone would be arriving soon — the one sporting 10GB of RAM and 5G connectivity.
True to their word, the company has announced the 5G edition of the Mi Mix 3 at this year's Mobile World Congress. So, what is the new smartphone actually like?
The new 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 is a full-screen flagship with the same big screen-to-body ratio and a hidden camera that slides out on a moving panel. In fact, looks-wise, nothing much has changed on the new version of the phone — and that's understandable as the Mi Mix 3 features quite an innovative design to begin with.
The Mi Mix 3 5G also uses an OLED 6.4-inch 1080p display and comes with four cameras in total: a 12-megapixel wide-angle + telephoto modules on the back and a 24MP selfie shooter on the front.
On the inside, however, there is an important change. The Mi Mix 3 5G Edition sports the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor (instead of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset on the original version). The new processor is there to enable a smooth 5G performance and is paired with Qualcomm's X50 5G modem. Xiaomi say that this will allow the phone to achieve data transfer speeds that are 10 times faster than possible on a 4G LTE network.
No exact date for the new phone's release has been announced yet — but the company did say it would be some time in May 2019. The price of the matter? The Mi Mix 3 5G Edition will be available for $679. This is just slightly more expensive than the base version of the original Mi Mix 3 that is available for under $500. In our humble opinion, that is not an unreasonable price to pay for access to a 5G network — and the Mi Mix 3 is the first smartphone in the budget category to offer that. In short, we are eager to see the Mi Mix 3 5G Edition go on sale in May and are expecting a very favourable user response.
