Earlier, Facebook teamed up with Xiaomi to develop a $200 standalone VR headdisplay device called the Oculus Go, Xiaomi version called Mi VR.
Earlier, the VR blog The Ghost Howls reported that Xiaomi had disbanded the entire Mi VR/Go development team, including 12 employees who were originally responsible for maintaining and developing the platform, which the blog said came from a "very reliable" source.
While The Ghost Howls said the news came from a "very reliable" source, in line with other information he had heard, he acknowledged that it was an industry rumour because Xiaomi had not responded to a request for confirmation. Foreign media have contacted independently and are also waiting for a response from the company.
Xiaomi disbanded the Mi VR team for several reasons, including "disappointing sales and use", relatively low hardware margins and relatively few Mi VR versions of the product, the report said.
Although Facebook did not comment on its partners' business decisions, foreign media also contacted the company about the future of Oculus Go helmets-specifically, whether Oculus will continue to develop Oculus Go hardware on other platforms. And whether it plans to cooperate with Xiaomi to develop the second generation Oculus Go.
Without confirming whether Xiaomi would disband the VR team, a spokesman for Facebook told foreign media: "We do not comment on our future product roadmap, but the Oculus Go helmet is still the best way to enjoy immersive entertainment. It is a great device for any user who has just tried virtual reality. We are still producing and selling Oculus Go, and we will, as always, keep our community informed of any updates to our portfolio.
