You can install Android Q Beta on your smartphone, but we do not recommend it

Android Q Beta 3 is available! Not only on the handful of Pixel smartphones, but also on 21 smartphones at OnePlus, Huawei, Honor, LG, Essential, Nokia, Oppo, Xiaomi... We tried the experiment on a smartphone (different from a Pixel), and we advise you against doing so.

Installing Android Q Beta on one of the 21 compatible smartphones is relatively easy. On a Oneplus 6T, for example, simply download the ZIP file, move it to your smartphone and launch a local update. The procedure takes a maximum of 10 minutes. At Essential, it's even easier, you have to download an application from the Play Store.

More concretely, it is Android Q Beta 3 which has just been announced at the I/O 2019, as the roadmap predicted. We will therefore be entitled to 6 beta versions before we can benefit from the final version for the third quarter of 2019.

This roadmap is not the roadmap of Google's partner manufacturers. This is the Google team's roadmap for compatible pixels. More concretely, if you install Android Q Beta on your smartphone (excluding Pixel), you will certainly not have a beta version at each step of this planning.

As last year with Android P, not all partner manufacturers are in the same boat. Depending on many parameters, the versions of Android Q Beta provided by the manufacturers will not have the same level of stability.

You can not make your smartphone every day

We tested Android Q Beta on a OnePlus 6T, for example, the installation is quick and easy. Unfortunately, you can't make it a "daily driver" - understand: your everyday smartphone. Loss of autonomy, general slowness, unstable Wi-Fi, bad network connection, camera crashing, fast charging that is not fast... and especially many functions are missing, including the different unlocking tools and Android Q functions that are present on pixels.

A quick look at the forums of other manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Huawei or Sony shows that the situation is the same elsewhere. This Android Q Beta version is far too early to interest users. From what we have seen, this is more of an alpha version.

Fortunately, there are methods to go back to a previous version of Android, but you will certainly lose time and you may also lose your data (remember to back it up).

Offer Android Q among the first, it is a pledge of confidence for the community

This Android Q Beta update is designed for the fan community and developers who will start deploying new features on their apps. And even then, it will be necessary to wait for Android Q Beta 4 to take advantage of the final APIs and SDK. Above all, it is a very positive message for the brand community regarding the deployment of the next major Android update: "You can invest in my device, you will get the next version of Android as soon as possible".

The dark theme, automatic subtitling, the new permissions system, accelerated file sharing, PC mode, screencast... the new features are many and Google still has some surprises in store for us.
