Apple buys vehicle start-up for its self-driving

Of course Apple continues to work on technologies for self-propelled cars. The most recent proof: The iPhone group has just bought the startup from Silicon Valley. Or at least what's left of it. Because, which was founded in 2015 by former students of the Artificial Intelligence Lab at the renowned Stanford University, was on the verge of collapse.

Apple vehicle start-up

Although has received around 77 million dollars in investment over the past four years (among others from GGV Capital, New Enterprise Associates, Northern Light Venture Capital or the investment arm of chip manufacturer Nvidia), it was for some time regarded as a pioneer in the field of autonomous vehicles. But already this week would have had to lock and approximately 90 coworkers before the door to put would have. Apple reportedly hit at a very opportune moment.

Remains of a pioneer

How many of's employees switch to Apple is unclear - there is talk of "a handful". Apple also bought the autonomous minibuses used by the startup in Arlington, Texas, and in a suburb of Dallas. Apple will certainly not pay for the 200 million dollars that weighed in at best times. But the exact purchase price remains secret.

With the "Project Titan", Apple has already had a secret project for the development of self-propelled cars for years. Such cars with built-in sensors have already been sighted in the USA. It remains to be seen whether Apple wants to produce all the cars or only technologies and software that can be used to make vehicles self-propelled. In this respect, strategic changes are likely to have taken place again and again.

Apple restructures

At the beginning of 2019, Apple laid off 190 employees in the field of self-propelled cars, before which Doug Field, a former Tesla manager, was appointed as the new head of "Project Titan". With the remains of - some of the founders have already left the team - Apple is bringing know-how into the company. But the planned partnerships of the startup with Lyft and Grab will probably no longer work out.
