Taken in a bad position internationally, Huawei has certainly already developed Harmony OS, an operating system for connected objects that would serve as a way out if the use of Android became too precarious.
But the Chinese manufacturer seems to keep other tricks in his bag. Before the announcement of Harmony OS, rumours revolved around Aurora OS, a Russian system that would have caught Huawei's attention. The giant would now like to test Aurora OS in practice thanks to a possible contract for the Russian administration.
"It's a pilot project," says an anonymous source at Reuters. We see it as the first step in launching the Russian OS on Huawei devices. The company would like to sell tablets under Aurora OS to the Russian Ministry of Communications for the next census of 147 million Russians, starting this October. But we understand that this would be a way for Huawei to test the implementation of Aurora OS on real devices in real life.
Aurora OS was originally a Finnish operating system called Sailfish OS, based on Linux and dedicated to mobile devices. It was then endorsed by Moscow and the current owner of Aurora OS is none other than Rostelecom, the Russian public telecom operator. The latter happens to be the only entity authorized to purchase tablets for the census.
In total, the contract would provide for the purchase of 360,000 Huawei tablets under Aurora OS by August 2020. Nothing is definitive at the moment, as negotiations are currently underway.
