As of Monday, 29 of the 42 Apple stores in China had reopened, according to a survey of Apple stores. In addition, these reopened retail stores have shortened business hours, with some opening hours less than eight hours a day. Normally, Apple's retail stores in China usually work 12 hours a day.
Apple's China sales business accounts for a lot of weight in the company's sales business. Apple said store closures were one of the main reasons for the failure to meet its revenue target of $63 billion for the quarter to March. Apple has not yet disclosed when the remaining stores in China will reopen. However, according to the websites of these stores, the stores will return to normal as early as this weekend (March 1).
Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook told employees that retail stores in China "are starting to reopen, but returning to normal is slower than we expected." However, the decline in sales is not unique to Apple. Overall smartphone shipments in China fell 37% in January from a year earlier, according to data released by the China Academy of Information and Communications.
