MediaTek has confirmed that it will present its first 5G chipset at its annual Summit event on November 26. According to the Mediatek website, the new MT6885Z chipset is based on the Helio M70 modem that supports 5G capabilities and is based on 7 nm matrix lithography. In addition, the chipset features ARM's new Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU designs. The new MT6885 chip is expected to be used on many upcoming mid-range phones like Redmi K30, Honor V30, etc.

In addition, the new chipset is also expected to support 4K video encoding and decoding at 60 fps. It is also expected to have the ability to work with mobile camera sensors up to 80MP resolution. All about the above mentioned 7 nm FinFET manufacturing process that will give it efficiency. Supposedly, the MT6885 is already in mass production. The hardware platform should start shipping to manufacturers in the first quarter of 2020.

An aggressively positioned mid-range 5G processor will also be introduced at a later date. It will be the Mediatek MT6873, one of the first chipsets of its kind. This model is expected to go into mass production until the second quarter of 2020, so there is still time for affordable mid-range options to emerge with Mediatek hardware. It may even be more efficient than other competitors, as MediaTek may be planning to use TSMC's future 6 nm manufacturing node.

Prior to this, the company had also released two other chips to its line earlier this year. We met the Helio G90/G90T focused on games and the SoC Helio P65 mid-range. It is also rumoured that Redmi is working on a 5G phone powered by a MediaTek chipset and it may be Redmi K30.

Medium Range Mediatek MT6873 5G

MediaTek will ship its mid-range 5G chip to Huawei next year. This will be the company's second 5G chip, codenamed MT6873. It will be aimed at the affordable segment of the smartphone market.

Over the past few years, MediaTek has focused on developing products for 5G technology. The flagship MT6885Z 5G chipset will drive several expensive 5G phones into the market in the coming months. However, it is the MT6873 chipset that should really excite us.

The MT6873 will power devices around $300. We still haven't seen any affordable 5G mid-range handset device on the market. For the second quarter of 2020 things are expected to change with respect to this. It is said that this chip will power Huawei phones. We could also see it within one or two 5G Honor devices.
