Microsoft, Apple and other tech companies say no to Trump’s tariff

Recently, starting with the US government imposing a 25 per cent tariff on China's US $200 billion exports to the United States, the impact of Sino-US trade frictions on both sides has also become deeper and deeper, thus causing concern in the US science and technology industry, and opposition voices have emerged one after another. Among them, including Microsoft, Apple, Intel and other technology giants.

Joint statement from Dell, HP, Microsoft and Intel

Dell, HP, Microsoft and Intel have issued a joint statement opposing President Trump's inclusion of laptops and tablets in his tariff list on Chinese goods, Reuters reported.

The move will hurt consumers and the industry as a whole and will not solve the (USTR) problem of the Trump administration's Office of the Trade Representative to the United States, the statement said; on the contrary, tariffs will hinder the ability of US technology leaders to innovate and compete in global markets.

In a separate statement, video game makers such as Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony Interactive Entertainment said tariffs on game consoles could stifle innovation, harm consumers and put thousands of jobs at risk.

In addition, the report also pointed out that Dell, Microsoft and HP accounted for 52% of the total number of laptops and removable tablets sold in the United States, and that if tariffs were imposed on them, the price of the equipment would rise.

The companies cited a recent study by the American consumer technology association, which found that the proposed tariffs would increase the price of laptops and tablets in the United states by at least 19%. The equivalent of an increase in the average retail price of laptops by about $120.

In addition to the four technology companies, Apple commented on its government website yesterday that the U. S. government should not press ahead with the proposal to impose up to 25 per cent tariffs on another $300 billion worth of Chinese goods.

Not only that, Apple also believes that imposing more tariffs on China would benefit its global competitors.

According to Lei Feng, Apple announced in a previous report that as the US company that pays the most taxes to the US Treasury, the company pledged to invest $350 billion in the US economy over the five-year period in 2018.

For now, however, Apple says Mr Trump's proposal to impose tariffs on goods from China, including iPhone, iPad and Mac, would reduce Apple's contribution to the US economy and hurt its global competitiveness.

In addition, it is worth mentioning that Apple has always been opposed to the trade war between China and the United States. Apple CEO Cook said in an interview with CBS (detailed in Lei Feng's previous report): "imposing tariffs on iPhone will hurt all these countries that make iPhone, but the most hurt is the United States."

According to foreign media reports, the (USTR) of the US Trade Representative has held a seven-day hearing since June 17 to hear views from US retailers, manufacturers and other companies on Trump's intention to impose tariffs on another $300 billion worth of Chinese imports to the United States.

Judging from the current situation, many of the largest technology companies in the United States have expressed their opposition.
