The presentation of Huawei Mate 30 series phones this week had many ups and downs. On the one hand, it was known beforehand that Mate 30 would have the open source version of Android, AOSP. On the other hand, the lack of applications such as Google Maps, Youtube, Play Store, etc. generated general frustration. However, a statement made in Munich by the CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, was taken as a momentary relief:
"We limited the unlocking of the bootloader because we wanted to guarantee more security for consumers. However, this time we will leave more freedom to consumers so that they can do more customization on their own."
If you don't know what the bootloader is, you must bear in mind that it is the bootloader of Android cell phones. This is important, because it identifies the kernel of the operating system for it to boot. Normally it is locked, but when it is not, it would let the user load sections of the memory that are not signed by the manufacturer. Basically, it would allow installing custom ROMs, and there would be the possibility of installing Google applications.
However, a Huawei spokesperson communicated with the same media to disprove this. As he points out, Huawei doesn't really have a plan to unlock the bootloader. Apparently, what Richard Yu said was misinterpreted. Nothing else was said, so for now the Mate 30 will run out of Google apps.
On that occasion Richard Yu also stated that the company was ready for a possible lifting of the U.S. blockade. He said this when asked what they would do in this hypothetical scenario. In view of this, the businessman clarified that they would update Mate 30 "immediately" if they were given the opportunity.
Although the most correct thing would be not to sow illusions for now. While Huawei is doing his best to convince the United States to recant, it doesn't look like the situation is going to change anytime soon.
