"The technology platform in the 2010s was mobile phones, and although I expect mobile phones to remain the main device for most of this decade, sometime in the 1920s, we will get groundbreaking augmented reality glasses products that will redefine our relationship with technology," Zuckerberg said. "
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that allows users to place digital objects on top of the real world. Today, it is mainly used on smartphones, but some companies, such as Microsoft and Magic Leap, have released mature AR headsets.
Since acquiring virtual reality company Oculus VR for $2 billion in 2014, Facebook has been trying to expand into VR and AR hardware. Last May, Facebook released $399 worth of Oculus Rift S augmented reality gaming glasses.
It is reported that Facebook is developing AR glasses codenamed Orion at its laboratory in Redmond, Washington. The company also hopes to reach a design cooperation between Luxottica, the world's number one eyewear group, with a goal of launching the product between 2023 and 2025. In addition, Facebook is also developing a voice assistant to control Orion glasses.
