The US Department of Commerce has extended the temporary public license granted to Huawei that allows it to do business with US companies until May 15. This is the fourth time that Huawei has been awarded this extension. In the press release accompanying this decision, the Department of Commerce also issued a request for general information on the matter, calling for US-based companies in the technology and communications sectors to share information about the potential costs of their business if licenses are suspended in the future.
All concerned have until March 25th to express their views to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Bureau of Industry and Security. Little statement journalist accompanying this extension is also that these delays are designed to allow US companies to find alternatives to equipment and services , Huawei and software.
While Huawei was blacklisted by the U.S. government in May of 2019, it was still allowed to work with its American partners and import components from them on the condition that “they do not pose a threat to national security.” In addition, Huawei was granted permission to resume limited operations in the network equipment and mobile services and cybersecurity research sector on U.S. soil.
Small US telecom companies that rely on Huawei equipment were among the severely affected parties as a result of U.S. government decisions. The U.S. government is actively seeking to help these companies cut ties with Huawei including paying their expenses on alternative communications equipment.
