This article is about the review of 5 popular 5G smartphones launched in the past month. Which is the best worth buying? Let’s look into more details.
In the early of the year 2019, the best solution to the full screen is controversial, whereas the latter half of the year witnessed the popularity of the hole-punch display.
These five smartphones all feature a hole-punch display, differing in the diameter and number of the hole.
The hole of Vivo X30 Pro 5G is the tiniest, followed by OPPO Reno 3 Pro, that of the Honor V30 is the biggest. Therefore, Vivo X30 Pro 5G looks the most attractive.
When the screen is turned off, the front camera is still visible. After you turn on the screen and unlock, the position of the front camera of OPPO Reno 3 Pro and Realme X50 5G will be indicated. Of course, you can also apply some unique design animations to Vivo X30 Pro 5G.
Smartphones with the OLED screen have a narrower bezel. The bezels of PPO Reno 3 Pro are consistent with those of the flagship smartphones. However, Realme X 50 5G, Redmi K30 5G, and Honor V30 use an LCD screen with wider bezels.
An OLED screen supporting a high refresh rate is relatively costly. Thus, the configuration is often found in mid-range or high-end smartphones. Most of them support 90Hz, only ASUS ROG Phone 2 has been incorporated with a 120Hz AMOLED screen.
It’s more reasonable to use the LCD screen to achieve 120Hz to make screens with high refresh rates readily available. Realme X50 5G and Redmi K30 5G are two examples.
Which is better, the 90Hz AMOLED screen or the 120Hz LCD screen? Will you have the problem of ghosting? I’ll carry out a test later.
Let’s turn over the smartphones.
As everyone’s preference differs, I won’t give my opinions about the colors. Among the colors of these five smartphones, it’s evident that most of them are available in orange and blue.
Although OPPO, Vivo, Honor target the young, the smartphones mentioned above appear less dynamic than the Redmi K30 5G.
After the independence of Redmi, the Redmi products become more and more fashionable, in brighter colors with a high contrast ratio. Even the names sound fascinating, such as Flower Shadow, Purple Jade Fantasy.
Redmi K30 5G and OPPO Reno 3 Pro offer an AG glass variant, while other smartphones only have a mirror glass back. Because OPPO Reno 3 Pro is too light, the frosted glass can adequately increase the friction for an excellent tactile experience.
Additionally, it is a consensus that a smartphone packs a triple-camera or quad-camera module. The design of the module is essential for an attractive look.
The typical practice is arranging the cameras vertically, and the position of the camera module might differ. The camera module of OPPO Reno 3 Pro, Realme X50 5G, and Honor V30 is in the upper left corner.
However, the rear cameras of Honor V30 are in the outer frame of the camera system. Redmi K30 5G has a camera module in the center, surrounded by a circle.
The rear camera module is similar to that of Huawei P30 Pro. However, the ToF sensor of Huawei P30 Pro is replaced by a periscope lens at the right.
If you hold these smartphones in hand, you will be impressed with the lightness and thinness of OPPO Reno 3 Pro with a double-curved glass front and back. The smartphone stands out among these five 5G smartphones.
Don’t overlook the differences of a few millimeters and reduction of tens of grams in weight. You can tell the difference in user experience. It will be a good thing if all 5G smartphones can be as light and thin as OPPO Reno 3 Pro.
Only OPPO Reno 3 Pro and Vivo X30 Pro 5G with an AMOLED screen feature in-display fingerprint scanner, while the other three boast the integration of the side-mounted fingerprint scanner and the power button.
That’s why the latter smartphones are thicker. Moreover, the insufficient recognition area might give rise to the security problem.
It’s worth mentioning that Redmi K30 5G and Vivo X30 Pro 5G have a 3.5mm headphone jack for those who want to use their favorite headphones. The former is also integrated with an IR blaster for convenient remote control.
Let’s get an overview of the display of these five smartphones at first.
90Hz refresh rate was as widely concerned as 5G in 2019. Realme X50 5G and Redmi K30 5G, these two pocket-friendly smartphones incorporate an LCD screen with high refresh rate support.
Even though Realme X50 and Redmi K30 5G adopt a 120Hz screen, the smoothness of the latter is higher. From the slo-mo video, we can’t find any considerable difference between a 60Hz display and a 90Hz one.
While playing video games at the same settings, we can find the differences with 120Hz, 90Hz, and 60Hz display in aiming.
As a matter of fact, the high refresh rate doesn’t mean the absolute smoothness. Only with the combination of a high sampling rate and compatible software can a display provide the best visual effect.
I conducted the same test – sliding the screen after the smartphones were put under 20 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes.
On the LCD screen of Realme X50 5G, Redmi K30 5G, and Honor V30, the ghosting is apparent. The lower the refresh rate, the more serious the problem is. In contrast, it is not the case with the AMOLED screen.
Please refer to the following table for the speaker and volume of these five smartphones.
