ASUS Mini PC PN60: Compact Assistant.

Mini PC which will provide a good level of performance for solving everyday tasks.

At the end of 2018, the ASUS assortment was replenished with new compact systems based on energy-efficient Intel Core i3-8130U, Intel Core i5-8250U and Intel Core i7-8550U processors. In the review you will learn about the ASUS Mini PC PN60, equipped with an Intel Core i3-8130U junior processor.

We will make sure that the new product can cope not only with Internet surfing, but also with most undemanding everyday tasks and consider it in more detail.

In the box

ASUS Mini PC PN60 comes in a small cardboard box with a very simple and concise design. Unfortunately, packaging cannot boast of high information content.

The package includes an external power supply with two cables and a VESA bracket with a rotating base and all the necessary fasteners. It is made in the form of a kind of lining, which must first be fixed to the monitor, and then installed in the grooves of the mini-PC itself. The entire structure can be fixed with a pair of small latches and a screw.

Design

At first glance, it may seem that the body is made of aluminum. However, this is plastic, which is very well styled in brushed metal. It looks stylish, practical and almost does not collect fingerprints and dust.

The bottom cover is locked with four screws. There are also air vents and a sticker with technical data. Two small holes on the sides are used to fix the device on the VESA mount. But four small rubber feet on the edges of the case improve traction when installed on a table, and also dampen possible vibrations.

The top panel is completely devoid of significant elements.

The front and back sides are reserved for various interfaces. On the front there are three USB ports, a combined audio jack for headphones and a microphone, a power button and an LED indicator.

The remaining connectors are concentrated on the rear panel. Here are: power connector, HDMI, DisplayPort, RJ45 network interface and three more USB ports.

The sides are reserved for ventilation openings, which are necessary for better air circulation inside such a compact case. On one of them Kensington Castle was sheltered.

Hardware platform and performance

Traditionally, for devices of this type, all internal components are fixed on a reliable metal frame. The build quality of the case is very good. The level of rigidity also does not cause any complaints.

Inside the case, two SO-DIMM RAM slots, a SATA connector for a 2.5-inch drive, and a pre-installed M.2 format drive are striking. An Intel 8265NGW wireless interface module with support for Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / ac and Bluetooth 4.2 is installed under the SSD.

The 2-core 4-line Intel Core I3-8130U processor used in the ASUS Mini PC PN60 is based on the 14-nm Intel Kaby Lake microarchitecture. The base speed is 2.2 GHz, but it can rise to 3.4 GHz thanks to support for Intel Turbo Boost technology.

An integrated memory controller provides support for up to 32 GB of DDR4 memory in dual channel mode with a frequency of up to 2400 MHz. In our case, one Samsung M471A1K43CB1-CRC DDR4-2400 module with a capacity of 8 GB is installed. Of course, it is better to immediately choose a pair of slats for organizing a two-channel mode.

The Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated graphics core consists of 24 execution units (EU). The base clock frequency is 300 MHz, and the dynamic can increase to 1000 MHz. IGPU does not have its own memory, therefore it uses operational memory. With a 128-bit bus, the throughput reaches 38.4 GB of information per second.

The disk subsystem is represented by the SK Hynix HFS128G39TND-N210A SSD drive of the M.2 2280 format. It is built on the basis of MLC memory with a total capacity of 128 GB and is equipped with a SATA 6 Gb / s interface.

The SK Hynix HFS128G39TND-N210A drive demonstrates good read speed in CristalDiskMark at the level of 553 MB / s, but the write speed reaches only 133 MB / s.

Performance ASUS Mini PC PN60 is at a basic level. This is enough for comfortable operation of the operating system and office-multimedia tasks. Fans will have to play with simple session online projects with minimum settings in Full HD or with higher graphics profiles in low resolutions.

Cooling system and power supply

When performing simple everyday tasks, the temperature inside the case is within 42 ° C. Running the stress test PCMark warmed up the components to a maximum of 54 ° C, although monitoring recorded throttling. AIDA64 creates a more significant load, so temperatures rose to 80 ° C, but frame skipping and frequency reduction were not observed. But when World of Tanks was launched at the minimum settings, the processor cores heated to 81 ° C, which again led to throttling.

At the base load, the cooler works almost silently. But even a short-term launch of demanding tasks increases the fan speed and the noise ceases to be comfortable.

The mini-PC runs on a small external 65-watt ASUS ADP-65GD power supply with a removable cable. The input signal parameters are 100 - 240 V at a current of 1.5 A and a frequency of 50 - 60 Hz. At the output, we get 19 V at 3.42 A. In the process, it was heated to 40-45 ° C, which can be called a normal indicator.

Conclusion

ASUS Mini PC PN60 is a worthy alternative to full-sized systems if it is exclusively about solving everyday tasks: searching for information on the Internet, chatting in instant messengers, watching videos, launching audio or working with documents. You should not even dream about more serious loads, for example, comfortable video editing. For such purposes, Intel Core i3 is frankly weak. The integrated video core allows you to run popular and not very demanding MOBA games and online projects, but only at low settings in Full HD.

ASUS Mini PC PN60 fits well with the concept of an office, school or multimedia PC. It does not take up much space and will provide a good level of performance for solving simple everyday tasks.
