I was looking for an ultra-portable laptop under 1.5kg for my work, and I found a lot of important aspects concerning how to choose a notebook.
Therefore, I would like to share with you the information I’ve gathered as well as the selection criteria. I hope that the post might be helpful to you.
As an office worker, I always go on a business trip and I have to carry a laptop, so I want to choose an ultra-portable one for my work.
Ever since iPad Pro led the trend in the market, it seems as if a tablet PC could replace a laptop as a means of production.
However, those who are constantly on the go know so well that the statement is limited because, in their mind, such portable equipment can only be a laptop computer.
OK, no more nonsense. Let’s look into more details about how to choose a lightweight laptop. What should we care about? Let’s start from the most important aspect and go on to the least important one.
Of course, I rank the importance of these aspects by myself. This is for your reference when you consider buying a notebook.
1. Under 1.5kg in weight
As for a portable notebook or an ultrabook, the lightness is definitely the most important, the second important is the thinness.
Of course, well-received notebooks in the market are both thin and light, so we only need to look at either aspect.
I used to be a commuter who carried a gaming notebook computer of nearly 10kg to take the subway. Evidently, it was cumbersome and inconvenient to carry. That’s why I think that any notebooks over 1.5kg are not worth buying.
So why 1.5kg and no more?
Because the weight that I must carry can be under control, i.e. under 2kg, even though I take the notebook together with the mouse, power adapter, and laptop bag.
Some notebook weighing about 2kg is barely acceptable because, in addition to the power adapter and some must-have accessories, I need to carry a total weight of 3kg. This is painstaking, especially for a commuter.
2. Includes interfaces that we need
Generally speaking, those who require a portable laptop need to carry it with them. Take me for example, because I always go on a business trip for working and training, so it is necessary to carry my laptop in order to give a presentation. If you are under such circumstances, you should consider what kinds of interfaces a notebook has.
As far as I know, an HDMI output port is preferable. If a notebook doesn’t have this interface, it would also be great to have a USB Type-C port or a lightning port. However, it doesn’t matter whether a notebook has a VGA interface or not, because I don’t use it in my daily life.
What’s more, another factor that you should take into account is the number of USB ports when you are buying an ultra-portable notebook.
Some brands only release products with a lightning or USB Type-C interface. It is likely that these two kinds of interfaces will be in fashion later, but at present, the most useful one is the standard USB interface.
This is because I need to connect the computer with a mouse and a USB flash drive. Therefore, the notebook must have at least 2 standard USB ports. If this is your case too, it is not sensible to go for a 12-inch MacBook, because it only has one interface and other peripherals can’t be connected to it when the laptop is charging unless an adapter is used.
3. Over 5h battery life for office work or relaxation
The battery life of a gaming notebook may not be as important as that of an ultrabook, on the contrary, it is critical to have lasting battery life. It is because ultrabook users need to work on the go. For example, during a business trip, when I ought to deal with some urgent documents, I can only rely on the battery of my notebook in case there is no AC power outlet nearby.
Such an emergency happens from time to time, though not frequently. However, to finish the daily office work, at least 5 hours of battery life should be ensured. The electric power suffices to work for half a day. If possible, the longer the battery lasts, the more convenient it will be.
4. Performance and screen
As for an ultrabook, I think the requirements of performance and screen should not be that high.
Firstly, let’s talk about performance.
At present, the CPU of the mainstream ultrabooks are mainly from Intel and AMD. The Intel 8th generation CPUs are the most popular, among which you can choose either i5-8250U or i7-8550U.
Both are quad-core processors with 8 threads. Although their power consumption and heat dissipation are limited, they are more than enough for me to cope with daily office work.
As for AMD, it is recommended to buy the new-generation Ryzen CPUs, such as 2500U and 2700U quad-core processor. These two processors differ in frequency and GPU.
Be patient! It is not difficult to understand at all. Basically, we find that the performance of AMD processors is similar with that of the low-voltage Intel processors, but the former ones feature better graphics performance, with which users can deal with office work and play games at leisure.
Simply put, we don’t need to worry about under-performing Intel or AMD processors when choosing ultra-portable notebooks. Both provide satisfying performance.
Secondly, let’s discuss the screen.
Nowadays, in the market, most of the latest notebooks feature 1920 x 1080 resolution or higher. Nevertheless, you don’t need to go for a high configuration, because a display with a lower resolution will not affect our work a little bit.
In terms of the material, an ultrabook user doesn’t need to care about the differences between IPS screens and TN screens. Of course, nearly all notebooks use an IPS screen now.
In fact, as it is the same with the performance, we shouldn’t focus on the screen when choosing an ultrabook.
6. Heat dissipation
Finally, let's focus on heat dissipation. The reason why I put it at the end is that the heat dissipation of most ultrabooks is ordinary, and because they use low-voltage processors, there will not be any problem with heat dissipation.
Additionally, both the thermal design power (TDP) and temperature threshold have been set, so the temperature will be under 80 degrees Celsius, which is a great conservative approach. Office workers don’t need to care about such things too much.
After weighing quite a few options, I finally decided to purchase the Huawei Honor MagicBook on Gearbest.
This notebook computer has fingerprint sensors for unlocking, and it is light and portable. The number of interfaces is enough for me.
The most important thing is that its resolution is 1920 x 1080, and the battery life can be up to 10 hours. Therefore, it is unnecessary to prepare a power adapter for working during the daily commute. Just grabbing the Huawei Honor MagicBook will do.
Another surprising thing is that the keyboard of Huawei MagicBook is very comfortable. I feel comfortable even after typing for a long time. Evidently, this ultrabook is a perfect choice for office workers.
I would be glad that the above is of any help to you. If you like it, please give me a thumbs-up to show your approval. I will share more tips with you later.
