Nokia X71 Review: Hole-Punch Display and Incredible Camera

Nokia X71 is a  device from Nokia which appeared in April 2019. At the moment it is available on sale in the Gearbest Store and you can order it now for $612.

The international version was not officially presented and most likely the international version will have a different name than the Nokia X71.

From the Nokia X line, the new X71 model reminds us of the well-known Nokia X7 model or the international version of the Nokia 8.1.

What is the global improvement for the new Nokia X71 smartphone? Third cameras on the back with a 48-megapixel sensor, front-facing camera hole punch display, like modern smartphones of the Samsung series. About other characteristics, I want to discuss in the full review below.

Let’s get down to the Nokia X71 in-depth review and start by unboxing.

Nokia X71: Unboxing

The outer box is very similar to the Nokia X7 in size and design. On the front, we see a sketch of the smartphone X71, hands and at the bottom of the model name.

On the reverse side are the main technical characteristics.

Inside the box, we found the smartphone itself, instructions in Chinese and English, a transparent silicone case, a Type-C cable, and an 18W power adapter.

I did not see anything surprising, the Nokia X71 smartphone received a similar package as its older brothers. Now I would like to pay attention to the ergonomics of the device.

Nokia X71: Design and Appearance

When I picked up the Nokia X71 for the first time in our test, I had very similar feelings as if I was holding the exact same Nokia X7. The design of this phone is thin only 8 mm as the previous version.
The dimensions of the Nokia X71 are 157.2 x 76.5 x 8 mm, but with a protruding camera, you need to add an additional 1.5 mm to the thickness.
The frame of the frame X71 is made of a single piece of 6000 series aluminum, but the front and rear parts are made of protective glass. The frames are also highlighted in copper-colored lines that contrast with black.

The front panel has a large 6.39-inch Full HD + IPS screen with a resolution with rounded edges and an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9 and it is slightly more extended than the traditional 18: 9 format.

The front camera like many manufacturers, such as Samsung, Oppo, and others, already have such a solution with hole punch display.

At the bottom of the case are a Type-C port, microphone, and speaker. Only one speaker is used in the device.

On the left side, there is a card slot – you can insert dual nano-SIM-cards or one nano-SIM-card and one micro SD card.

On the right side, there is a power/lock button and volume rocker. The unlock key has a white rim backlight, which is activated during charging or missed calls and messages. The very original decision, and it looks very nice.

On the upper side, there is a headphone jack (thank God that Nokia does not follow this stupid trend of trend removal).

On the back, there is another microphone, a flash, a fingerprint sensor and a triple camera with a copper rim.
The fingerprint sensor is located at a good height in the center under the camera and is within reach of your finger. It works very well and quickly.

Excellent appearance, color solutions are perfectly combined. But there is a drawback, for example, the glass case is very easily soiled and leaves fingerprints. But the build quality and materials are very well folded, no squeaks and gaps in place. The design of Nokia X71 is exemplary, although the price tag of a middle-class smartphone.

Nokia X71: Screen

With each new generation, Nokia is increasing the size of its screens, and this is true of the Nokia X71 in our analisis.

The screen is large 6.39 inches and IPS LCD Full HD + with a resolution of 2316 x 1080 pixels at 400 ppi with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. It is also worth noting that Nokia uses PureDisplay display technology in X7.
It has a contrast ratio of 1400: 1 and a maximum brightness of 500 nits. The screen has rounded edges on all sides, but I got used to it very quickly.

It is worth noting that Nokia uses a special hole-punch on the screen for the front camera, which has the name “Eye-Click”. This solution is used for the first time on Nokia smartphones.
The disadvantage of the IPS screen is that the screen cannot transmit black as the OLED screen.

Except for this little thing, the screen on the Nokia X71 in our test is excellent, and in sunny weather, the screen is clearly visible.
It has the function of a permanently on the screen. The screen displays basic information such as time, dates and notifications.
Also, the screen has a night mode for easy reading at night. And the screen can be activated by double-clicking on it.

Nokia X71: Hardware and Performance

The Nokia X71 comes with a Snapdragon 660 processor. If you recall, the Nokia X7 has the same processor as the X71. This is a middle-class device that will provide stable and good performance for everyday tasks.
New generation Nokia X71 comes with 6 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal memory. You can increase memory up to 256 GB with a micro SD memory card.
Although this is not the most powerful features of modern smartphones, you will not have problems with multitasking or launching applications. Everything works very smoothly. Of course, contributes to the operating system Android One, in which there are no unnecessary applications.

For example, PUBG Mobile worked without problems, without any delays at medium graphics settings. Surfing smooth.
Therefore, in terms of performance, the new Nokia X71 didn’t surprise us. Also, performance is the same as the Nokia X7.

Nokia X71: Software

One of the main features of the Nokia X71 is its pure Android 9.0 software. The X71 is one of the few phones with relatively new Android One from Google.

Android One was primarily intended for cheaper mobile phones that would allow for a cleaner and faster operating system. It could work with weaker specifications, but it was considered a good idea for both smartphones and Google, so Android One came out on all models of Nokia phones.

The main feature of Android One is that it is a “clean” version of the Android Pie OS, without any unnecessary add-ons, no viruses apps, only some basic Google applications are pre-installed, some of which can also be removed.
Google promises to have at least 2 years of updates for devices with this OS, and perhaps there will be more. In addition, Google allows unlimited uploading of photos in original quality to Google Photo.

Such a system provides fast and smooth operation, in which the user is allowed to choose what he wants to install, without intrusive applications that will never be used.
Thus, the device works very quickly and without problems, and the big bonus is that the Nokia X71 in the analisis is insured with an update for at least 2 years.

Nokia X71: Camera

The Nokia X71 has the same main camera as the Redmi Note 7. Compared to the Xiaomi, Nokia has three sensors on the rear panel, this is a 48-megapixel camera with an aperture of 1.6 microns and an aperture of f/1.8.

The main camera uses the Samsung GM1 sensor, which is exactly the same as the Redmi Note 7. This means that the 12-megapixel camera was interpolated to a 48-megapixel sensor.
The second is the 8-megapixel sensor for ultra-wide photos. And the last third sensor has a 5-megapixel with f/2.4 aperture for the bokeh effect. All sensors use Zeiss optics.
In normal mode, the Nokia X71 in our test also has the ability to shoot panoramas, Pro mode, where you can manually adjust all parameters, bokeh mode – when the background is automatically blurred, the ability to simultaneously record photos from both cameras, enhancement and much more.

The camera works very quickly, takes pictures almost immediately and without delay. The pictures are very good, with one click you can easily switch to another camera with 2x optical zoom.

Focusing is very fast, images are saved without delay, colors and contrast are very good, and there are no special objections to them.
Although the camera is not similar to the latest devices, such as the Samsung S10, the pictures are satisfactory. The camera interface is clean, without unnecessary modes that will never be used, intuitive and simple.

The front camera also has a 16-megapixel camera with Zeiss optics, without a front flash. For flash, the trick is used to make the screen brighter than yellow. The front camera also has bokeh mode, Pro mode, HDR mode, a timer and more.
As for the video, the latest Nokia X71 can record with UHD 4K resolution, while the front can record HD 1080p and also record audio in 360 degrees. During shooting, you can quickly switch between two cameras, that is, wide-angle and 2x optical zoom.

Nokia X71: Battery

Nokia X71 has a 3500 mAh battery with fast charging. Unlike the Nokia 8 Sirocco, there is no wireless charging.

The battery life is average, one day using the Nokia X71 is guaranteed. If you use the phone with savings, it can work up to 2 days without charging.
When it comes to charging, the adapter comes with fast charging capability (18W, 9V/2A). For example, from 5% to 75% can be charged in one hour.

Nokia X71: Conclusions and Reviews

Although the Nokia X71 is a mid-range phone, it looks like a premium device in our review. The quality of the assembly and materials at the highest level. The glass front and back panel with an aluminum frame blends well.

The screen quality is at a good level and the 6.39-inch size makes it well-folded for watching videos or playing games. Also, a new chip with a hole-punch display for the front camera – it looks modern and stylish.
The performance and battery life compared with the previous model Nokia X7 remained unchanged. This is the same processor and the same battery capacity.

It is worth noting that the triple camera from Zeiss provides good pictures both at night and in the daytime. Also, a 48-megapixel camera with a Samsung GM1 sensor ensures good picture quality.
The Nokia X71 is a middle-class smartphone that looks and behaves as if it were the flagship smartphone. Although there are some drawbacks, they are not significant.
