Gamer design

Let's start with the configuration. The box is matte and made in an unusual design: you immediately realize that inside is exactly a gaming device. On the front side are the Black Shark and Tencent Games logos, as well as the 5G mark. All these details shimmer with colorful shades.

Inside is a smartphone, instructions, a silicone case with cutouts, a USB Type-C cable, and a 30W power adapter. The Pro version supports 65 watts.

As part of the presentation, a number of accessories were presented, including a button gamepad and an external cooler with customizable backlight. They will have to be purchased separately.

The smartphone is available in three colors: black lightning, gray armor, silver star and hot pink. If we talk about the version of Black Shark 3 Pro, then the last two options are missing.

Black Shark 3 looks unusual compared to typical smartphones with identical back panels. The back is glossy plastic with matte inserts and two symmetrical triangles: in the upper three cameras and a flash, in the lower Tencent Games logo and a magnetic connector for charging at 18 watts.

The logo also attracts attention - it glows in various colors, which is logical for gaming technology. In addition to it, small luminous stripes are located in the triangles. The colors, speed, direction and type of logo backlighting can be controlled in the settings: not only a constant glow by any color is available, but also various types of blinking or random mode. Color can be gradient, asymmetric or rainbow. A lot of attention to such a small detail.

The arrangement of the elements is as follows: at the top almost in the center is a 3.5 mm mini-jack, at the bottom there is a Type-C 2.0 and a microphone, at the top left there is a slot for two nanoSIM and a small volume rocker, on the right there is a microphone, power button and game mode switch. The frame is aluminum, matte. The weight of the smartphone is 222 grams - in this case it only gives convenience.

Display

The front design is also non-standard for 2020 - no cutouts or holes in the display, but only symmetrical protrusions on the top and bottom. At the top of the speaker and the camera, at the bottom an additional speaker to create stereo. It sounds worse than the flagships of Apple or Samsung, but for games this is enough.

Display 6.67 inches, matrix AMOLED, resolution 2400 × 1080 pixels, pixel density 395 ppi. Supports extended dynamic range HDR +, DCI-P3, as well as Always On Display.

In the settings, you can adjust the white balance and color profile, enable HDR and Super cinema mode for video. A flicker suppression switch and dark mode are available.

Unfortunately, the refresh rate of the screen was not brought here 120 Hz, putting only 90 Hz. In justification, the company assures that this is not such an important indicator, much more interesting is the sensor response speed, which is as much as 270 Hz.

The fingerprint scanner is hidden under the display - it works instantly.

Flagship chip

In the case of a gaming smartphone, hardware is the main part. Although nothing new can be invented here, all flagships will have one processor in 2020 - the 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 865.

It is made according to the 7-nm process technology, along with it comes with an X55 modem for working in the fifth generation and Wi-Fi 6. Bluetooth networks of the fifth version, the aptX HD and aptX Adaptive sound standards are supported.

RAM 8 GB standard LPDDR4X and 12 GB standard LPDDR5. Permanent memory: 128 or 256 GB type UFS 3.0.

The second important detail is cooling. It has a liquid cooling system with a length of almost 100 mm. The printed circuit board and the cooling unit are combined in one strip and complemented by a large graphite coating on both sides. The company claims that such a cooling system is 100% more efficient than in the previous generation.

The smartphone has a narrow motherboard with a length of 116 mm, it is installed so that the heating elements are dispersed in order to avoid overheating from heat sources.

In synthetic tests, the result is as follows:
• AnTuTu - 561 407
• GeekBench - 571 and 2615 points

There will be no problems with the speed of the interface or games. The merit of not only the processor, but also the optimization of the system.
JoyUI instead of MIUI.

For some reason, the shell was called JoyUI, but it is MIUI 11 with Android 10. The differences are in the interface design and additional applications.

One of the most noticeable changes is the gaming space. You can get into it using a separate switch on the right side. Here, accessories are connected, processor power is adjusted, display mode, audio and network are turned on.

In some cases, you can control in games using voice commands, for example, in the Pro version of a smartphone in the game, you can throw a grenade with your voice. So far, only two games support this feature - this is PUBG and King of Glory.

Of the interesting things, there are Wi-Fi quality and processor load monitoring, a second desktop, children's space and one-handed control mode.

Almost 5000 mAh

For all these indicators, the question of autonomy arises. Black Shark 3 received a 4720 mAh battery. The battery is divided into two batteries. In just 15 minutes with a complete charger, the smartphone is gaining 60%.

In the settings, you can turn on the smart charging process, then it focuses on heating the smartphone - if the temperature is critical, the charging power decreases.

Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging. Instead, there is a magnetic connector on the back, the cable will have to be purchased separately. In this case, the power is only 18 watts, but it’s more convenient to use a smartphone and if you accidentally jerk during the game, the cable will simply disconnect without breaking the socket.

Cameras

Not at all an important parameter when it comes to the gaming device. In the usual Pro version, it is triple. The main sensor is 64 megapixels with an aperture of f / 1.6, the second sensor is wide-angle 13 megapixels and with an aperture of f / 2.2. The last sensor is only 5 megapixels and it acts as a depth sensor.

It supports HDR shooting, video can be shot in 4K with a frame rate of 30 or 60 fps. FullHD shooting is possible at 30, 60 and 240 frames per second. You can shoot even with 1920 fps, but only with a resolution of 720p.

Not to say that the camera here is strong enough, it’s definitely not a camera phone, but it can satisfy standard needs. There is even a night mode and AI to improve the picture.

A 20 megapixel front camera with an aperture of f / 2.2, shoots HDR, video maximum FullHD at 30 frames per second.

Conclusion

Playing Black Shark is a pleasure. Impressive speed, heating (its absence) and autonomy. Among the minuses (could be better) is the slow Wi-Fi, the LPDDR4X memory standard in the younger version and only 90 Hz of the screen.
